Until now a link left the inbox in one of two ways: it became a bookmark, or it did not. That works for links you can place, and not at all for the ones you want to hold on to without deciding where they belong — most of what lands in my queue on a weekday evening.
With the release v1.12.0 adds a third answer — Keep — and a tab to hold what you keep. The widgets follow a day later in v1.13.0: a tile set to two columns now says more, not the same thing larger.
Keep
Every queue row has a Keep button, Shift + K keeps the row under the cursor, and so does the right-click menu. The link leaves the queue for good — with its note and its tags — onto a hidden Unsorted page, and a toast names where it went, with Undo. The inbox now has two tabs, To triage and Kept; Shift + U opens it on the second one.
One key changed meaning: r used to keep in triage and mark read in the list. It marks read in both now, and keeping is Shift + K everywhere.
The Kept tab
A pile of postponed decisions needs more than a list. Each row says what it is: its tags, how long it has waited, and file on … when most of that site’s filed links already sit on one page and category — one click puts it there. Group by site, tag, suggested tag or age, then tick a whole group and file it in one go.
Work through (f) puts one link in front of you at a time with every answer underneath it, and ends on a count:
f | work through the list | b | back to the inbox |
m | move to a page | s | skip |
z | snooze | d | delete |
Two lines keep the list honest: one counts the kept links that stopped answering, the other the ones you have since filed elsewhere, with Remove the kept copies. Kept links stay out of the dashboard’s pools, the tag cloud and the health report; search still reaches them unless you switch that off.
One bug worth naming: filing is add-then-delete, and a delete that failed after the add left a link filed and kept. The filed copy is now taken back off the page.
Two columns say more
A widget set to two columns used to show the same reading, wider. Every one of the twenty-one kinds now has a wide reading and a narrow one:
The extra readings follow the width the tile actually got, not the number of columns it asked for: narrow the dashboard, or open it on a phone, and each tile drops back to the half worth having, with nothing refetched. Lists run in two files when there is room.
The Kept widget gained an order — most recent, at random, or by tag — and prints each link’s address under its title, cut in the middle rather than at the end.
That first cut broke the weather widget, which spent a day saying Weather unavailable: the new readings continue Open-Meteo’s current= parameter, and adding them dropped the parameter itself, so the answer carried no current block at all. A patch the same day fixes it, and the test now reads the request rather than the reply — the old stubs answered any URL, so nothing looked at what was asked for.
Smaller changes
- Health rows are found by URL, deletes go to the trash, and both can be undone from the toast.
- Config → Bookmarks writes only the rows that change, and a move refuses a URL already on the target page rather than dropping it.
- Icon and preview sweeps run behind a counting bar with Stop, and wait out the rate limit instead of ending on it.
- Record server log is a toggle in the log toolbar now, and every line carries its own server sequence number.
- 25 strings the code used had no locale key and showed in English everywhere. All six locales are complete again.
Upgrading
docker pull ghcr.io/jordibrouwer/nextdash:latest
# or
docker pull foobar1452/nextdash:latest
Unraid users: update the container from the Docker tab. The inbox tour reopens once after the update — it is a different tour now, mostly about Keep.
Full notes on the GitHub Releases page, and the code as always at jordibrouwer/nextdash.
